One of two simple solutions to western saddle fit for horse or mules.
The first is (FSA) EquiScan pressure mapping of the finished saddle. It will show tree fit, pressure distribution, and any manufacturing defects in the construction of the finished saddle. In addition, it will also show the rider's balance in the saddle.
The second is Bare Tree Fitting.
Bare Tree Fitting
You have your saddle maker test bare trees or tree sizers on the back of your horse. Then build your saddle. There are hundreds maybe thousands of styles and models of trees for western saddles.
This method leaves no doubt that the tree will fit your horse.
The problem is which tree manufacturer do you choose. There again are hundreds and maybe thousands world wide that manufacture saddle trees. They may have upward of hundreds of different designs and fits of saddle trees. They can be manufactured with defects after they are assembled. ie: wrong bars, mismatched bars, each bar a different length, the gullet may not be cut on the same angle, seat may be set wrong, the rock and twist of the bars maybe off, screws or nails sticking out. These are just some of the problems we have uncovered in saddles. In addition there are many more small private manufacturers of saddle trees.

Several years back I counted Ralide Saddle trees had around fourteen trees that they said had Quarter Horse Bars each a different size. The problem was which bar was in the saddle you are buying. Most retailers just label them as Quarter Bars, Arabian Bars, Gaited Horse Bars, Mule bars and etc. In addition, they make trees for other breeds and disciplines of riding. With each being different labeling for the breed or discipline. Just changing the name but not the consturction of the bars. The Ralide Saddle Tree Company has since been sold out and closed.
